France Work Permit Guide: What Non-EU Workers Need to Know

Working in France as a non-EU national requires navigating a layered immigration system. However, France has made significant improvements for skilled workers, particularly through its Talent Passport programme.

Talent Passport (Passeport Talent)

The Talent Passport is a multi-year work and residency permit for highly qualified professionals. It covers: employees of innovative companies, researchers, artists, and founders. It lasts up to 4 years and can be renewed.

Standard Skilled Worker Route

For most other roles, your employer applies for a work authorisation (autorisation de travail) with DREETS. The employer must show the role cannot be filled by an EU/EEA national first. Processing: 4–12 weeks.

Skills Shortage Roles

France publishes a shortage occupation list. Roles on this list bypass the labour market test. Currently includes: IT professionals, engineers, healthcare workers, and some construction trades.

Language Requirements

Unlike Germany, France has no formal minimum language requirement for work permits, but French proficiency is practically essential for most non-tech, non-research roles. Paris's international business community operates in English, but outside of that, French is non-negotiable.
