Following post-Brexit immigration reforms, the UK's Skilled Worker Visa route saw its salary thresholds rise dramatically in April 2024. This guide explains the updated requirements and how to navigate the application.

New Salary Thresholds (2024–2025)

The general salary threshold is now £38,700 gross per year, up from £26,200. However, the relevant threshold is the higher of this general figure or the "going rate" for the specific occupation code (SOC code) in the eligible jobs list.

Shortage Occupation List

The shortage occupation list was replaced by the Immigration Salary List (ISL). Roles on the ISL still attract a 20% discount below the general threshold. Common ISL roles include certain nursing grades, care workers, and some engineering specialisations.

Your UK employer must hold a valid sponsor licence. Sponsored roles require a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) issued by the employer. The application fee for workers is £719 for roles up to 3 years or £1,420 for longer.

Processing Time

Standard processing takes 3–8 weeks. Priority and super-priority services are available for faster decisions (for a fee).
